Throughout the summer, the Gastown Business Improvement Society hosts historic walking tours of Gastown. Step back in time as historians hold a 90-minute tour. The tours focus on the rich history and colourful characters of what was once the core of 19th century Vancouver. Hear dramatic folklore while feasting on the architectural past of the area. You'll find out how this area has become a restoration marvel, learn about the world's first steam clock, and listen to the history of the community's founder, saloon-owner Gassy Jack Deighton. The tours are free.
- Venue Description:
This part of downtown got its name from saloon owner Gassy Jack Deighton, who was a rather chatty fellow. In case anyone doubts the true root of the area's title, there is a large statue of this historical figure on Water Street. Cobblestone streets and original architecture, shops, restaurants and bars fill the area. Highlights include The Landing, Hill's Native Art, Deluxe Junk Co., Salmagundi West and the Irish Heather Bistro.
