Overview
Amsterdam Sauer is a Brazilian gemstone dealer who moved from France and ended up in Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s. He opened the second largest store for gemstones in all of Brazil. The museum takes its name from the city in the Netherlands which was the biggest importer of diamonds and other gemstones in Europe during the last century. The museum in the heart of the city shows off many of Sauer's original finds when he worked as a miner, gemologist, geologist, and finally as a jeweler. Emeralds, aquamarines, imperial topaz (mined only in Brazil), tourmalines, citrines, and Brazilian opals can all be found in the museum. - Yves Schliebener
