Banana Cafe, Rio de Janeiro

This combination bar, restaurant and nightclub serves contemporary cuisine well into the early hours, and is a great spot to come and relax over a meal and cocktails. With comfy sofas for lounging, the bar area serves an inventive array of snacks and long drinks, and there are some well-prepared versions of Rio staples such as portions of pasteis (stuffed pastries), here filled with shrimp and a spicy sauce. Steak served with finely sliced potatoes, goat's cheese, and bacon is more unusual fare, while the pizzas are nicely thin and crispy. Relatively quiet during the week, things get busy on weekend evenings, with when Banana Cafe throngs with fashionable, wealthy locals. - Lucy Bryson
