Bar das Quengas, Rio de Janeiro

The name means "prostitutes' bar" in Portuguese, and this cheeky late night bar has been decorated in the style of a 1920s Parisian bordello. Lacy underwear are strewn from the ceiling, and the bar's name is lit up in in garish pink above a giant lipstick kiss. Bar das Quengas is a 2008 newcomer on the lively Lapa drinking scene, but has proved a hugely popular one, with drinkers and diners taking advantage of the opening hours to enjoy everything from an early morning coffee to an end-of-the-night beer and bite to eat. Snacks include roast quail, while a popular plate to share is the mixed barbecue with rice, which easily serves three. - Lucy Bryson
