Casa Villarino, Rio de Janeiro

A meeting point for musicians, artists and intellectuals since it first opened in 1953, Casa Villarino is the spot where Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes-the duo behind  "Girl from Ipanema"-were first introduced. Little has changed today, and the laid-back spot continues to function as a lively bar, restaurant and delicatessen. Daily set meals include cod with broccoli rice and sun-dried meat pancakes, while items from the deli, such as brie and parma ham, are available as bar snacks or sandwich ingredients. The bar, which is handily placed for those exploring downtown Rio, also boasts an excellent range of whiskeys. - Lucy Bryson
