Right at the heart of Rio's ‘Cultural Quarter,' close to museums and cultural centers such as the excellent Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, this laid-back spot is an ideal place to unwind with a drink and a plate of food after a day indulging your arty side. On sunny days, the pavement tables and chairs are great for people-watching, while the interior, which combines the relaxed ambiance of Rio's old school botecos with modern comforts such as air conditioning, is a welcoming space on a rainy day. As well as ice-cold draught and bottled beers, this bar-restaurant is famous for its extensive range of cachacas (sugar cane rum, the local firewater). To soak up the alcohol, take your pick from bar snacks such as cod and potato balls, or opt for something more substantial such as Portuguese cod served with potatoes, broccoli, tomato and onion. Culture vultures might want to head here for Tuesdays' live jazz sessions, with the well-chosen wine list offering a sophisticated alternative to beer and cachaca. -Lucy Bryson
