Overview
Lapa is better known for its samba and its riotous street parties than its high culture, but this university-owned music school is a great place to catch free opera, chamber music, and even symphony orchestra performances. The talented students hold regular shows here, in a grand 1920s building that recalls the city s belle époque. The main auditorium, the Salao Leopoldo Miguez, seats more than 1,000 people. The area surrounding the music school is a little seedy at night, and performances are sporadic, so do check local press for listings before heading out here. - Lucy Bryson
