Gay and lesbian visitors to Rio should make a beeline for this well-groomed street close to Ipanema beach, located just a stone's throw from the designated 'gay-friendly' section of the famous sands (instantly recognizable by the large rainbow flag that flies there). The street is known as the gay heart of Rio's beautiful south zone, and is awash with opportunities to eat and drink in chic, sleek surrounds. If you're looking for no-holds barred nightlife you would be better advised to head to Copacabana, but for a discreet scene in one of Rio's real beauty spots, this is the place to be. -Lucy Bryson
