Leafy Laranjeiras is often overlooked by tourists rushing from one 'must-see' Rio attraction to another, but an ever-increasing array of interesting restaurants, lively bars and welcoming cafes combined with a picturesque setting make it a lovely place to unwind and escape the crowds. Maya Cafe is a great case in point, with its pavement tables and chairs offering an ideal opportunity to unwind over a coffee and a leisurely breakfast beneath the trees. With games and toys provided for children, this is a good spot for family visitors to Rio, while the range of coffees is sure to keep the grownups alert. It's the breakfasts that are the major draw here though, starting from simple affairs featuring bread, butter, jam, coffee and juice for under BRL15 to a hearty two-person spread of breads, cheeses, preserves, fresh fruit, juices and hot drinks and cold meats laid on for around BRL25 per person. Later in the day, sandwiches and cooling beers are the order of the day, and this is a nice spot to shoot the breeze without being hassled by the vendors that stalk the sands at tourist hotspots like Copacabana.
