Miam Miam, Rio de Janeiro

Housed in a tiny white colonial building in unassuming Botafogo, Miam Miam is a hidden treasure on the Rio dining scene. The byword here is comfort food', but don't expect to find a menu full of stodgy potatoes and pasta. Mains include such treats as chicken pancakes with fresh asparagus, mushrooms and parma ham, while vegetarians will enjoy options like wild mushroom risotto. The décor is a major part of the appeal – all furnishings are original pieces from the 1950s, 60s and 70s – and the background music has been selected by local DJs.
