Nova Estudantina, Rio de Janeiro

One of Rio's most traditional dance halls, Nova Estudantina is the place to come for those who take their dancing seriously. The musical programme has diversified in recent years to take in rock, soul, as well as traditional samba and forro, and all music is performed live. This might not be the best place to come if you're looking to get up close and personal with the locals: "scandalous kissing" is expressly forbidden, as is dancing with a member of the same sex. Well-chilled bottled beer is the order of the day here, and bar snacks, such as fried aipim, are simple but tasty. - Lucy Bryson
