Sacadura, Rio de Janeiro

One of a cluster of nightclubs opening up in this previously rundown docklands area north of Centro, Sacadura is one of the best places in Rio to hear live MPB (Musica Popular Brasiliera - Brazilian pop music). It remains a little off the beaten track, but is worth seeking out in order to hear covers of classics from the likes of Jorge Ben Jor, Gal Costa and Rita Lee, performed by extremely professional local musicians. Samba Rock adds to the musical melting pot, and the eclectic musical mix attracts a varied clientele made up of all ages and social types. The area can be a little seedy after dark, so it's wise to take a taxi to and from the venue. -Lucy Bryson
