For food with a spicy kick, head to Yorubá. The restaurant combines flavors from Bahia and Africa, and delivers a menu full of fiery flavors. The chef, Neide Santos, arrived in Rio in 1997, having found culinary fame in Salvador during the 1970s and 80s. In Salvador, his restaurant Zanzibar was a firm favorite among acclaimed musicians such as Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. Zanzibar even gets a name-check in Gil's 1983 track Lady Neide. Seafood dishes are the best choice here, especially those featuring shrimp or crab. A popular order is the Ebubu Fulo – fish with coconut milk, smoked shrimp and fresh shrimp, accompanied by a puree of plantain and rice. Prices are on the steep side, but main courses serve two or even three. - Lucy Bryson
