Overview

MuBE was founded in 1995 on 7000 square meters (75,300 square feet) of land successfully revived after a protest against the construction of a shopping center. Paulo Mendes da Rocha was the modern architectural force behind the concrete structure that punctuates a Roberto Burle Marx-designed landscape. The establishment leads to underground exhibition areas that feature a rotating schedule of established and emerging artists. The inaugural show saw 140 pieces of Victor Brecheret, while works by Candido Portinari, Sônia Ebling, Francisco Brennand and Ivald Granato have graced the space. Sculptures in bronze, stone, ceramic marble, iron and a host of media are showcased by way of geometric representations, graphic installations and three-dimensional art.
