Found on a long traffic island in the middle of Andrés Bello Avenue, is this grandiose monument, surrounded by a perfectly-kept garden. On top of the large pedestal, proudly stands the figure of Juan Rodríguez Suárez, the restless "Captain of the Red Cloak" who, without any official permission, founded Mérida not only once, but twice. The nearby El Punto or Zumba is where the second founding of the city occurred. However, Suárez not only established and then re-established the city of Mérida, he also opened a road through the northern moors so as to reach Santo Domingo. It is also surprising to see that this monument is larger than the one downtown dedicated to Simón Bolívar.
