Overview

In the vicinity of the elegantly laid out and leafy treed Plaza Bolívar, along with the classical looking civil and religious buildings running down the side of the square, the so-called Palacio Las Cinco Aguilas Blancas (Five White Eagles Palace) displays a somewhat discrepant architecture and facade. The building was acquired by the State of Mérida in 1997 to be turned into its administrative seat and to lodge, at the same time, the Legislative Assembly or legislative authority. The five eagles on the entrance are derived from the indigenous legend telling the origin of the snow-covered peaks that gaze down on the city, now known as El León (Lion), El Toro (Bull), Humboldt, Bolívar and Espejo (Mirror).
