The town of Santo Domingo grew from a stop-off on the road between the plains of Barinas and the mountains of Mérida, twenty-five kilometres away from Apartaderos. Today, however, it is a fully-fledged tourist centre in its own right, offering services at all levels, including accommodation in the luxurious La Trucha Azul International Resort, or in the somewhat more conventional Hotel Los Frailes. Good food, handicrafts and flowers, trout fishing and mushroom cultivation all await you, surrounded by the beautiful and blooming Valleys of Santo Domingo. Visit the Champiñonera (mushroom farm) of Santo Domingo, the largest in Latin America, which produces 5,000 kilos of this appetising fungus every day. Also in the vicinity are the impressive installations of the Santo Domingo trout farm: numerous horseback, hiking, mountain bike and fishing excursions begin here. For some strange reason, the local Patron Saint is not Santo Domingo but San Jerónimo, whose feast day is celebrated on the 30th of September.
