Today a large number of market stands characterize the setting of Graz's Hauptplatz (main square). Apart from debates about whether or not the stalls should be there, the center of Graz is rather peaceful today. Buildings and commercial activity dominated the square as early as the 13th Century. In the 14th Century, torture instruments and executions livened it up; open-air beheading was a daily spectacle.
