From the well known skiing center of Igls in the eastern Mittelgebirge, the Patscherkofel line takes visitors to the "Alpenpflanzengarten", the highest botanic garden of Europe. The greenhouse of the Federal Forest Research Institution of Vienna, managed by the branch-office for sub-alpine forest research in Innsbruck, has existed since 1962. It is used as a research center for eco-physiological studies at the alpine timber-line. The 8500 meter (27,887 feet) garden, with its diverse mountain-flora lies at about 2000 meter (6561 feet) above sea level. More than 400 different alpine mountain plants can be admired here. The garden opens daily from 9a to 5p from June to September.
