Café Cardinal, Innsbruck

There are quite a few Murauer Cafes in Innsbruck, over ten at the last count. All have a classic Austrian coffeehouse ambiance and sell homemade cakes and pastries. The choice is huge, with rich, "Malakoff" and "Marconi" tarts, chocolate and cream slices and light, fresh fruitcakes. Their baked products are often sold off in specially organized sale weeks, particularly for seasonal goods, such as rhubarb-based breads and pastries. Yet it's not all sweet! They do light snacks (Goulash soup, toasted sandwiches and salads). Every Murauer outlet in the chain offers breakfast (this includes a cup of coffee or tea or hot chocolate plus one sweet or sour pastry, fresh from the oven). As a little something to take home with you, try one of their homemade chocolates.
