Vienna Pop Culture

Austria's unfathomable history has been chronicled, parodied and endlessly studied in books, music and film. To check out some films to get you in the mood for the wiles of Vienna, visit The Film Commission of Austria. If you can, get your hands on a copy of ‘Sissi.’ It's a nationally-beloved look into the life of the city's favorite empress. As for music, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert, Brahms, Strauss and Mozart all lived in Vienna at some point. You just can't go wrong—and what a great excuse to re-watch Amadeus!

Thousands of books, both fictional and historical, have been written about Vienna, and more are surely being written as you read this. Historical fiction lovers will never want for nourishment with titles like ‘The Fig Eater,’ ‘The Third Man,’ ‘The Painted Kiss,’ ‘Desire’ and ‘Delusion,’ and a host of everything stories by John Irving taking place, at least in part, in Vienna. For kids, check out ‘Mozart Finds a Melody’ or ‘Marie Antoinette: Princess of Versailles,’ which tells the tale of her Vienna childhood in the Hofburg.
