Overview
The monument to Empress Elisabeth, built by public subscription in 1907 nine years after her death at the hands of an Italian anarchist in Geneva, lies in a rather melancholic garden of rememberance in the Volksgarten. Hans Bitterlich and Friedrich Ohmanns subdued monument was conceived and built before the Sissi industry got off the ground. These days here image is used to sell all manner of souvenirs and she has also been the subject of a rather mawkish musical which was a box office smash in Vienna in the late nineties.
