Künstlerhaus, Vienna

This historical building, which stands on the Karlplatz next to the equally famous Musikverein building, was set up as a center for social events and the display of exhibitions for the oldest artists' organization in Vienna. After 1945, it was gradually adapted into a modern exhibition hall for larger collections. The Künstlerhaus Cinema, with a capacity of 280, was established here in 1949. It shows almost exclusively films of artistic interest, but there are also notable film festivals (Viennale) that regularly take place. Special showings in the form of matinees are a further focus point of the viewing program, as is Die Theater that includes smaller productions.
