Overview
Heinrich Festel built the University of Vienna between 1873 and 1883 in the style of the Italian Renaissance, yet the history of the university began long before the construction of its main building. As a result of the Alma Mater Rudolfina society, founded by Duke Rudolph the Fourth in 1365, the University of Vienna can pride itself in being the oldest university in the German-speaking community. Nowadays, the main building is referred to by the students as "Hauptuni" (Main-uni). The University Institute and other facilities are disbursed throughout the city.
