After Belgium attained independence in 1830, the assurance of which was guaranteed by the Congress of Vienna, there was felt a need to create a safe fortification, in case any power decided to invade. Thus, plans were suggested to build a national reduit, which is a term used to indicate a large fortification. Several forts were built across the country, starting from 1850. But the Fort van Liezele would be built as late as 1906. Today, this fort, which is an immaculately preserved example of pre-World War fortifications, offers excellent panoramic views of the city of Puurs, and is a recommended visit while in the city.
