Overview
The Terezin Memorial, located a one-hour drive north of Prague, is split into a museum and an exhibition space. The museum is in the town of Terezin, about a 15 minute walk from the Small Fortress, or prison. The museum details the sufferings and the cultural activities of the 140,000 Jewish people who were deported here between 1941 and 1945. Nearby, one of the barracks and other structures where the prisoners lived and worked have been converted into an exhibition space. Most visitors head for the 18th-Century Small Fortress, which the Nazis utilized as a prison. Earlier in the century, Gavrilo Princip, the assassin of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, was incarcerated here.
