Vor Frelsers Kirke (the Church of Our Saviour) is situated in the romantic surroundings of Christianshavn, the island between Copenhagen and Amager. Architect Lambert von Haven built the church in 1696. At that time, the church could not afford a spire, so the beautiful tower that now crowns Vor Frelsers Kirke was not added until 1752. Now, the tower with its twisted gold and copper spire, which takes you 95 meters (311 feet) and 400 steps above ground-level, is the most famous part of the church and offers a splendid view of the surrounding city. The interior is not to be neglected, however, as the organ, which was built in 1698, and the carillon are both fantastic pieces of functioning art.
