Café Mockba has all the charm of the former Soviet Republic, and Eastern European Bolsheviks. A spartan 1970's throw back to the USSR, Café Mockba offers quite an experience. Originally opened as an escape for the owners of the Corona bar next door, the idea was to have a small bar that was tucked away, serving a lousy selection of drinks and sandwiches that are sold the day after they're made. Dirty, faded curtains prevent visibility from the street and an old record player plays yesterday's Soviet hits. Despite its best efforts at anonymity, Café Mockba is now a favorite with the tourists. The bar was blessed by a conductor from the Red Army's Musicians of the Corps, who splashed vodka on the walls to keep the cats away. If washed out, used up, and broken down is your idea of chic, then Café Mockba should be at the top of your list anytime you are in Helsinki.
