Tour du Masque, Cannes

According to legend, the Man in the Iron Mask (the famous prisoner of the Bastille) escaped from Sainte-Marguerite island and spent the last years of his life in this 12th-century tower. According to legend, his ghost haunts the tower on some nights. If you don't see the ghost, then try to at least get scared by the dummy on the yellow building to the right (la résidence de la Citadelle). There is a sign that reads: "Passer-by, stop to meditate on the sufferings of this torture." There is a fairly steep incline leading to the tower, but the views of Suquet and old Cannes are well worth it. Visitors are not allowed inside the tower.
