Ciotat (La), Marseille

A former colony of Marseilles, La Ciotat is situated on the coast, between Marseilles and Toulon. It witnessed the birth of cinema as the site of the first short film by the Lumière Brothers in 1895: The Train arrives at Ciotat Station. Also a port, the town was once known for its ship-building, although this is now in decline. The town is endowed with an abundance of natural attractions such as the rocky inlets or calanques at Mugel and Figuerolles and L'île verte (the green island), a beautiful reserve ideal for walking, only fifteen minutes away by boat. There is also a marine park which the kids will love.
