Overview
On a hill just above the Skate Park in Marseilles is a large, strange sculpture overlooking the sea. The Seven Gates of Jerusalem (or The Gate to the East), by the sculptor David Soussana, was inaugurated on June 25, 1989 in the presence of Francois Mitterrand, French President at the time. The modern sculpture, made of seven interlocking arches, is considered to be one of the city of Marseille’s major pieces of artistic heritage. David Soussana is a painter, sculptor and architect, Director of the Municipal Gallery of Jerusalem and artistic advisor for the mayor; he also used to be General Consul of Israel in Marseilles and Monaco.
