Musée National Gustave-Moreau was established at the residence of the French Symbolist painter, Gustave Moreau, in accordance with his last wish. A spiral staircase, with an ornamental balustrade, connects three floors replete with oil and watercolor paintings, drawings and sculptures. His works boast of fantasy characters, angels and beasts inspired by the Bible, Greek mythology and literary classics. This museum houses one of his most famous paintings, Jupiter and Semele, depicting a passionate scene between two allegorical characters. A number of family portraits and the artist's written commentaries offer deep insight into his life and personality. His art has inspired the Surrealism movement as well as contemporary writers.
