This historic city square is situated in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. Place d'Italie takes its name from l'Avenue d'Italie, which is the point of departure from Paris to Italy. Before the Haussmann reforms and extensions, this square was barricaded by the Mur des Fermiers Généraux, separating Paris from Gentilly. Today it is situated at the center of the arrondissement, acting as a major thoroughfare and joining together the districts major quarters: Gobelins, Butte aux Cailles, and the Quartier Asiatique (Chinatown).
