Calcutta, Berlin

Located just off Berlin's premier shopping boulevard, Calcutta offers a sumptuous array of flavors to visitors seeking an alternative to bratwurst or schnitzel. With its exquisite curries and cozy furnishings, it has a fair claim to being the city's best Indian restaurant, as well as its oldest. The hustle and bustle of Kurfürstendamm seems a continent away when one enters; the sound of flutes and sitars gently wafts through the restaurant, and colorful murals depicting Indian folk legends are to be found on every wall. Berlin is not particularly renowned for its Indian cuisine, but Calcutta, serving delicately-spiced dishes since 1967, should be on any curry enthusiast's agenda. -Thomas Miodrag
