It's difficult to believe, but even the totalitarian East German state tolerated this particular political cabaret. Founded in 1953, the Distel was threatened only twice by political censors during its turbulent history. It survived, by and large, due to its immense popularity and hilarious performances. The ensemble playing is the hallmark of the house. The theater wants the contemporary situation in Germany to be reflected in political satire, entertainment, and live music.
