Meintani, Athens

If you have ever been to Crete, you will know that the island is home to some of the best Greek cooking. And here in Meintani, you can sample authentic Cretan food in this family-run and very popular taverna, which is just down the road from the university residences for Cretan students studying in Athens. The service is friendly and attentive, and the taverna has some nice touches, such as giving all their customers a complementary glass of Cretan reikie. There is a small, shaded outdoor seating area and an indoor area (although a bit crowded at times) is stylishly decorated and spotlessly clean. - Mary Cochran
