Overview
The majestic mansion at 12 Panepistimiou Street is a splendid example of neo-classical architecture and is beautifully decorated with wall paintings. It was built in 1881 by the renowned architect Ernst Ziller for the great archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. Founded in 1829, the museum possesses a unique collection of 600,000 coins from the classical, Roman and Byzantine era as well as from more recent periods. The depictions on the coins speak volumes about each era and reflect both the craftsmanship and the political and economic conditions of each period. The museum also features a large library on numismatics.
