Athens awakened to a new life in 1834, when it became the capital of the young Greek state after the fierce War of Independence. The decades that followed brought about an explosive growth that totally changed the face of the city. Among the first buildings of this new era was the St Paul's Church. This basilica was constructed between 1838 and 1842 by the renowned architect Stamatis Kleanthis.
