Overview

Easily accessible by car, the 3000 hectare Tatoi estate is situated on the south-east slope of Mount Parnitha, 25 kilometres from Athens city centre. Established in 1867 by King George I, the one-time summer residence of the Greek Royal Family was abandoned when Monarchy was abolished in 1967. Eerily peaceful, visitors are free to explore the lavish remains of the estate where Prince Philip was born and his family are buried in the Royal mausoleum. Swallowed by over-growth, the Dutch-style farm houses, the ivy-covered swimming pool and the grand stone steps surrounding the palace itself provide an intriguing insight into Modern Greek history and 20th century royal life. -Stephanie Bailey
