With its beginnings going right back to the eleventh century, this castle has been repeatedly ravaged, attacked, invaded and bombed, not just because of the 20th century World Wars but centuries of destruction. However restoration efforts have now made it a World Heritage Site that is protected. The surrounding areas of the castle are lined with beautiful Baroque style houses and grand public buildings. A must visit on the itinerary of every visitor to Budapest, the Buda Castle is Hungary's nagging reminder of its wartorn and nostalgic past.
