Overview

This tiny tavern serving Tuscan traditional lunch was established in 1927 as a wine and oil shop. At that time it was one of the many places where local people went to have a glass of wine and to play a card game. It is situated just round the corner from Museo dell'Accademia, and nowadays La Mescita is always crowded with locals stopping for a quick bite. If you want to eat standing up, there is a huge choice of panini with different kinds of typical Tuscan cold cuts or even roast-beef and fried meat chop. For a small extra you can have dried tomatoes or eggplants, mushrooms or small artichokes added to your sandwich. La Mescita also offers a daily changing selection of pasta dishes and main courses of meatballs, Florentine-style tripe or “porchetta”—that is, an entire pig prepared with garlic and rosemary and roasted in a wood oven. Wine is still very good. The place is included in the list of Historic Florentine Food Stores and Wine Shops. - Maria Frullini
