Overview

The name of the restaurant Il Pennello, "brush" in Italian, refers to the fact that in the 15th Century, Renaissance painter Mariotto Albertinelli opened an osteria in this same place. Among his clients then were his artist friends and colleagues. A plaque with the painter's face reminds visitors of this historic first owner. Nowadays the restaurant offers the typical Tuscan menu. Farro, ribollita and tomato soups are classical first courses, but in addition they also serve the Carabaccia," an old-fashioned dish that includes cheese, roasted bread and vegetables. A Tuscan specialty is meat, but you'll also find such fish offerings as baccalĂ  livornese-style (codfish with tomato, pepper and garlic). For vegetarians, the mixed fried season vegetables are an interesting option. Pennello is located in medieval center of town, just around the corner from the House of Dante. -Maria Frullini
