Overview
In the valley of the Bisagno river, this Benedictine abbey is one of the most important and best preserved Romanesque, Genoan churches. Commissioned in 1025 by the Landolfo bishop in the birthplace of the first bishop of Genoa, Siro, there have been various restorations which eliminated the baroque additions and restored the splendid original facade. It is entirely made of stone with a three part facade, a valuable belltower and semicircular apses. Inside there is a font dating from the thirteenth century, a stature of San Siro from 1640 and a splendid portrayal of San Siro, dating from the beginning of the sixteenth century, showing a horrendous monster of a half serpent and a half dragon, a symbol of heresy.
