The present area covered by the town of Bacoli includes some important Roman sites and has its roots in Greek mythology. Hercules, after having defeated Geryon, built some stables here where he housed the oxen of the defeated monster. During Roman times this area attracted the Roman aristocracy with its beauty, the pleasant coastline and the thermal springs. The Romans built splendid villas and imposing bath complexes here. Inside the archeological park you can visit the Temple of Mercury where the water creates evocative echoing effects. Other monuments which you must see include the Piscina Mirabilis, the most important Roman cistern ever discovered, the terminal of the Serino acqueduct which served the port of Miseno, the Roman naval base, the Cento Camerelle, and the Tomb of Agrippina. The treasures discovered during excavation work in the Campi Flegrei have been placed in the Castello Aragonese in Baia.
