The church of Pio Monte della Misericordia is a splendid example of Baroque monumental architecture, founded in 1600 and funded thanks to the desire of a group of young aristocrats. Since then it has gathered the works of many prestigious artists. Today anyone can view this permanent collection, consisting of more than 150 paintings, ranging from the 15th to the 19th Century. Particularly important are the fascinating paintings bequeathed by the famous Neapolitan painter Francesco de Mura. Inside the Church there are seven chapels which show off the work of the great master of light, Caravaggio, via The Seven Acts of Mercy, a wonderful example of Neapolitan 16th-century artistic fervor.
