Overview
The quaint yet visually stunning island of Stromboli makes a wonderful two or three day trip from Palermo. It is roughly five hours by ferry from Milazzo, just east of Palermo. The main attraction here is the still-active volcano. From the edge of the crater you can see some fairly spectacular seismic activity. The hike up the volcano is no walk in the park, and doing so unguided is apparently illegal—numerous outfits in town sell guided tours. Contact Navigazione Generale Italiana ferries for schedule and fare information. Ferry and hike schedules vary. Call for details.
