The Orto botanico (Botanical Gardens), accessible through Via Lincoln, are home to a wealth of lush vegetation and some beautiful neoclassical buildings. The original buildings were erected in 1785 during the time of Caracciolo and soon gained international praise. The central building, called Ginnasio, was used to house the classrooms, the library and the director's office. Nowadays, the Orto occupies ten hectares (25 acres), and thanks to the city's mild climate, it is surrounded by lush fruit trees: bamboo, pinapple, lime, banana and others.
