Overview

One of the best examples of Renaissance architecture in Palermo, the Church of San Giorgio stands gracefully and harmonically in front of the sea. In 1575, the prosperous colony of Genovesi, merchants and bankers from Republic of Genoa, decided to construct the building in the most modern part of the harbor to prove their prestige and commissioned the plan to architect Giorgio Di Faccio. The elegant facade foreshadows the nave and the aisles inside, which are equally sober but enlivened by the rhythm of columns and segmental arches. On the floor there are sixty-four ancient gravestones and above the altar stands an imposing octagonal dome. Many valuable paintings once in the church are now hosted in the National Gallery of Palazzo Abetellis. - Valentina Caviglia
