Rome OVERVIEW
Nineteenth-century writer George Eliot said of Rome travel that Rome, Italy is "…the city of visible history, where the past of a whole hemisphere seems moving in funeral procession with strange ancestral images and trophies gathered from afar.” And it’s still true to this day. Rome is not nicknamed the Eternal City for nothing! The word that comes up often in describing this ancient metropolis is “palimpsest,” which means “parchment or the like from which writing has been partially or completely erased to make room for another text.” Walk down the street in the historical center and you’ll get it: there, next to a clunky Fiat from the 1970s sits a Renaissance-era palazzo built in the place of a Romanesque building that is built on top of an ancient pagan temple. There are restaurants that don’t look like they’ve changed ...See More since the 1950s (because, in many cases, they haven’t) as well as high-fashion boutiques at the base of the Spanish Steps, techno clubs dug into ancient hills, and cafes encompassing Roman ruins. Sure, there are places and things to be seen here—sites to check off the list—but a Rome vacation is all about exploring, getting lost and stumbling upon something new. With the exception of some petty theft on the subway, it’s a safe city, so feel free to get yourself lost and see what you discover as you enjoy your Rome travels.  See Less
