Da Baffone, Rome

This restaurant, which is particularly famous for its game dishes, has been run by the Venetian Portello brothers for more than 50 years. Although the food is based on Roman recipes there are also noticable Venetian influences. The meat dishes are excellent as are the game and mushroom recipes, but the fish courses and the pizzas (which are cooked in a wood oven) are also of a high standard. Among the specialties are Farro (a type of bean) with shrimp and mushrooms, Gnocchi with asparagus and Fusili (pasta) with spiced meat and zucchini. The home-made desserts are delicious. The wine and grappa list is also good.
